Persistent back pain...needs treatment.

Understanding the causes of back pain.

Back pain can stem from many causes, some of which may be difficult to pinpoint. The pain may result from muscle injury, during sports, exercise, or other activities. However, some patients with severe pain may need to consult a doctor.

Diagnosing the cause of back pain can be done in several ways. X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are accurate and precise methods because they help to reveal abnormalities within the body. Common causes include:

  • Herniated spinal disc compressing the nerve.

  • Spinal canal stenosis

  • Spinal disc herniation compressing the nerve.

  • Scoliosis

  • Other diseases unrelated to the spine.

When should you see a doctor?

You should consider seeing a doctor when...

  • Self-treatment hasn't improved my condition.

  • The pain is so severe that I cannot perform my daily activities.

  • There is a sudden, severe pain.

  • I am worried about the pain that I can't manage.

Assess your pain level yourself.

1. It hurts a lot.

  • The pain was so severe that I couldn't live a normal life.

  • cannot sleep

  • It's difficult to move; I can barely do anything.

2. Moderate pain.

  • The pain is constant, but bearable.

  • I can't sleep soundly.

  • Move slower; certain postures can cause pain.

3. Mild pain.

  • The pain comes and goes.

  • The pain is so bothersome that it interferes with daily life.

Self-help methods to relieve pain.

What should be done

  • Exercise regularly to strengthen your core muscles.

  • Apply a cold compress to reduce pain.

  • Apply a hot compress to relieve muscle tension or stiffness.

  • Take pain medication as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Learn the correct posture for sitting, standing, bending, and lifting heavy objects.

Things to avoid

  • Sitting or standing for more than 2 hours continuously.

  • Activities or sports that pose a risk of spinal injury.

  • Lifting heavy objects with incorrect posture.

  • Smoking

Understanding and preventing back pain can reduce the risk of spinal problems. However, if symptoms are severe enough to require medical attention, MRI and X-ray scans can help doctors plan accurate treatment.
